I recently watched an old clip of André Leon Talley filmed on a tennis court, where he, in his iconic fashion, discussed health and wellness, but mainly style. It made me reflect on how lifestyle and wellness trends have shaped generations. Starting with Dr. Kellogg’s wellness retreat in the 1860s, which sparked the cereal wars, moving through the synchronized swimmers glamorized by Hollywood in the 1940s and 50s, and the aerobics craze of the 1980s that introduced the iconic athleisure look with leotards, scrunched socks, and high-top sneakers. In the ’90s, Baywatch popularized the lifeguard aesthetic, and by the 2000s, SoulCycle had redefined fitness with its $40 class structure. Today, we’re witnessing a revival of “wealth-status” sports, like tennis and golf, traditionally paywalled behind members-only clubs.

The iconic Sambas, initially designed for indoor soccer, has become a must-have for it-girls and off-duty models. Wales Bonner’s collaboration with Adidas has further elevated the Samba, infusing it with a sophisticated, contemporary twist that appeals to a diverse audience. This trend celebrates soccer’s cultural impact and nods to Afro-Caribbean influences–seamlessly integrating it into mainstream fashion, with retro jerseys, minimalist sneakers, and track pants becoming everyday staples.
The convergence of these sports influences with athleisure fashion reflects a dynamic shift in health, wellness, and lifestyle trends. This summer, the fashion landscape is characterized by tennis-inspired outfits, golf’s tailored looks, and soccer’s retro aesthetics. These elements create a narrative where sports and fashion intersect, reflecting a holistic approach to modern living that values performance and style.

Understanding the science of SPF (Sun Protection Factor) and the role of zinc oxide in sunscreens is crucial. Zinc oxide, a mineral that provides broad-spectrum protection, reflects UVA and UVB rays and is ideal for those seeking natural or mineral-based options. With terms like “sunblock” now outdated due to their implication of total protection, “sunscreen” more accurately reflects the product’s role in reducing exposure to harmful UV rays.
Choosing the right sunscreen, whether gel-based for oily skin or moisturizing creams for dry skin, is essential for maintaining skin health while enjoying outdoor sports.

Everyone Should Wear Sunscreen: There’s a pervasive myth that Black and melanated individuals don't need sunscreen due to their naturally higher levels of melanin–which does offer some protection but is not sufficient to prevent UV damage. Regardless of skin tone, everyone is at risk for skin cancer, hyperpigmentation, and premature aging from UV exposure. Finding a sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast can be challenging for those of us with darker skin. Formulations with micronized zinc oxide, tinted options, or chemical sunscreens are more suitable, as they blend seamlessly into the skin.
Don’t Forget your Ears: Additionally, people often forget to apply sunscreen to areas like the ears, back of the neck, hands, and feet, which can be just as vulnerable to sun damage as the more commonly covered face and arms. Protecting these overlooked areas ensures comprehensive sun safety for all skin types.
